With the hope of making a new friend, Emily Blair replied with polite warmth, “If you enjoy cats, take a good look around. You won’t find this many breeds all in one place once you’re back home.”
But Larkin Porter didn’t look at the cats. His striking blue eyes were fixed intently on Emily.
“You’re the most beautiful woman from Eldervale I’ve ever seen.”
Emily’s hand stilled as she was petting a fluffy tabby. She managed a cordial, distant smile. “Thank you for the compliment.”
The blond, blue-eyed charmer flashed her a roguish grin. “I mean it. I’ve been watching you ever since you walked in.”
“You really… stand out.”
Emily just repeated, “Thank you.”
Larkin tilted his head, grinning to himself. “Are you feeling shy?”
Emily hesitated. “Uh…”
Larkin reached out, absently stroking the cat’s tail. “Women from Eldervale really do get shy, don’t they? I get it—I’ve met plenty of shy women from your town.”
He offered her another dazzling smile. “But in the end, they all turn out to be wonderfully warm.”
Emily clutched the cat, unsure what expression to wear.
She changed the subject briskly. “People from Vanguard Automotive will be here soon. Where are we meeting?”
Larkin answered offhandedly, “Probably on the third floor.”
His gaze drifted from her face to her hands, his lips curled in a casual smile. He reached out and gently took her hand.
Emily didn’t react at first, but as she saw Larkin’s lips moving toward the back of her hand, her eyes widened. She tried to pull away, but his grip tightened, and he pressed a light kiss to her skin.
A strange, tingling sensation shot up Emily’s hand. She quickly snatched it back.
Larkin laughed. “Don’t be nervous, Ms. Blair. It’s just how we greet friends in my country. No need to be shy.”
Emily returned a faint smile. “Well, I should go find my colleague now. The meeting’s about to start, and I wouldn’t want her to be late.”
