Emily and Elizabeth spent the entire day inside the villa, watching the storm rage. Outside, rows of trees bent in unison, and the sound of snapped branches hitting the villa's massive glass windows was unnervingly loud. The howl of the wind filled every room.

They were in the middle of an online meeting with their staff, headphones on, listening to a calm report, when a tremendous crash echoed from outside. Emily turned to see that the wind had uprooted a thick tree and slammed it against the floor-to-ceiling windows. She heard a faint cracking sound.

The villa was designed like a duplex, with a wall of glass stretching from the first floor to the third. If that window shattered, the entire living room would be exposed. They would have to take refuge in the bedrooms. And right now, both she and Elizabeth were in the living room.

A few moments later, the crack in the glass became clearly visible. Emily immediately unmuted her microphone, cut off her employee, and calmly paused the meeting.

“What is it?” Elizabeth asked, looking over.

“The window is about to break,” Emily said, packing up her laptop. “We need to get to our rooms. Now.”

Elizabeth saw the fracture lines spreading across the glass and her heart jumped. “Is it really that bad?” she asked, but she was already gathering her things, following Emily upstairs.

Just as Emily pushed open her bedroom door, all the lights in the villa went out. In the next second, the cracking sound from downstairs escalated into a deafening roar. The window exploded inward, and a fierce gust of wind and rain blasted into the living room. Glass shards flew everywhere. The massive treetop crashed onto the sofa and floor lamps, sending debris flying with a chaotic clatter.

As the wind whipped at their faces, Emily shoved Elizabeth into the room, quickly followed her inside, and slammed the door shut.

The room was pitch black, the only sound the howling gale outside the window.
