My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 983

Another staff member who had come along was tall and lean. He seemed less affected by the wind. He wore the hood of his raincoat pulled low, obscuring his face, but Emily could see the sharp, clean line of his jaw.

He extended a hand to her.

Emily looked at the hand, then suddenly paused, her eyes lifting to study the man’s face more closely. He was wearing a resort-branded raincoat, but he wasn’t one of the staff.

“One moment, please,” she said softly. “I need to get our luggage and laptops.”

Elizabeth heard her and turned back. “Oh, right, I forgot! Can you grab mine too, Emily?”

Emily nodded to the man in front of her and quickly went back to her room. She hastily stuffed their laptops into their suitcases and returned, dragging both bags behind her.

The man took both suitcases with one hand and offered his other to her again. Emily placed her hand in his. His warm palm closed around hers, and with a gentle tug, he pulled her forward, his arm circling her waist to hold her steady against the wind.

Her nose almost brushed against the fabric of his raincoat. She could smell the storm and hear the faint sound of his breathing. He guided her forward a few steps. The wind was so strong they had to stay close, hurrying toward the car.

Once inside, Emily sat between Elizabeth and the man. The staff member who had helped Elizabeth got into the front passenger seat, and the SUV slowly pulled away. The man beside Emily lowered his hood, revealing the face she had expected to see.

Elizabeth turned at the movement, her mouth twitching. “…Andrew Lane?”

From the front seat, the staff member explained, “The typhoon is hitting hard, and we’re short-staffed all over the resort. Mr. Lane here volunteered to help out, and we were grateful for the offer.”

Looking out the window, Emily could see that the road was indeed littered with debris, most of which had been cleared to the side.

Elizabeth gave a dry laugh. “Is that so? Well, that’s very kind of you, Mr. Lane… But really, thank you both so much. We lost power and water, and we had no signal to call for help. I thought we were going to starve in there. All we found was a bag of carrots.”

The staff member chuckled. “Don’t worry, we’re taking you to the main resort center. There’s plenty of food there. You’ll be able to eat as soon as we arrive.”

This distracted Elizabeth. “Is everyone else there?”

“Yes,” the staffer confirmed. “We’re moving all guests to the main building. The facilities there are safer and better equipped. This storm is unusually strong, and several villas have had their windows broken. It’s too dangerous for guests to stay there. We have teams bringing everyone over.”

“Thank you for all your hard work,” Elizabeth said sincerely.

The staff member smiled and scratched his head, a little embarrassed. He handed them each a towel. “Here, you can dry off a bit.”

As Emily was drying her hair, a drop of water landed on the back of her hand. It had fallen from Andrew’s raincoat. She paused and turned to look at him. His hair was wet at the temples, and his face was a little pale, which made his dark eyes seem even blacker.

“What is it?” he asked.

Emily hesitated, then said quietly, “Thank you…” She remembered their unpleasant conversation the night before and the harsh things she’d said to him.
