The radio was playing but I had yet to burst into conversation. I was keeping myself occupied by staring out the window. He had yet to strike up a conversation either and I hate to say it, but I could feel some tension between us, and it wasn’t sexual.
A sigh fell from my lips as I ran a hand down my face. I didn’t know what to say. He wanted to drive me three hours away and I was fine with that but not to sit in silence for 3 hours.
“You’re killing me here Jake. What’s wrong?”.
“I’m thinking babe. Just because I’m not talking doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong”.
“So, I’m just imagining the tension between us?”.
“No”. He shook his head. “It’s definitely there but it’s not coming from me”.
I frowned. What did he mean? I wasn’t causing tension. Was I?
“How so?”. I asked. “And if I can feel it then it’s coming from you as well. Not just me Jake”.
“Watch your tone”.
“You’ve been weird ever since I told you I was going back with my dad”.
“I’m fine”. He shrugged. “You want to go to your dads, and I can’t stop you”.
That was the end of the conversation because I turned my head back around and kept my focus on the views we were passing. Even though it was dark and I couldn’t see anything.
But at this point I’d rather that than talk to him or with the way the conversation was going argue with him.
We didn’t utter a word to each other for the next hour. When he pulled into the gas station I unbuckled my seat belt, a sigh of relief falling from my lips. This was torture and I had to get out of the truck.
I had no idea how to fix whatever it was but this between us right now, I didn’t like it.
“You stay put”. He spoke. “It’s dark and we’re in the middle of nowhere”.
“I need to pee”. I made a face.
“Then you wait for me”. He frowned.
“Really?”. I rolled my eyes.
“Yes, fucking really”.
I didn’t like his tone and me being me I got out the car slamming the door shut being me. This reminded me of when we first met. When he thought he could control and tell me what to do.
Clearly it didn’t stick.
Shoving my hands into my jacket pockets I walked my way into the gas station and made a beeline for the bathroom. I wasn’t a fan of the restrooms in gas stations but a girls got to pee.
