Chapter 66

The chief’s words struck Benjamin like a bolt of lightning. He had never imagined that Rebekah’s skills at the hospital were real, that she was actually a brilliant surgeon. For the first time, it hit him that by ruining her right hand, he had destroyed her entire career. A wave of darkness washed over him as he realized she was meant for a much brighter future.

Candice feigned surprise. “Sister, I had no idea you were so accomplished! Why didn’t you ever tell us? We’re family. Your achievements are our pride, too.” Then, with a sly look at the chief, she added, “And it seems you and your boss are quite close.”

The implication was clear: if Rebekah was so talented, why had she kept it a secret? She must have used some underhanded means to get the chief on her side.

Candice’s words instantly extinguished the flicker of guilt in Benjamin’s heart.

“Rebekah, is it that hard to admit you’re not exceptional? When did you become so desperate for validation? Did you think putting on a show for me would make me think more highly of you? Dream on.”

Rebekah let out a bitter laugh. “I’m not in the mood to put on a show for you. You’re not that important.”

Ignoring Benjamin’s darkening expression, she turned to the chief. “Shall we go, sir?”

The chief, sensing the matter was private, respectfully asked no questions and simply left with

her.

Her posture was like that of a bamboo stalk-slender but straight, unyieldingly proud. As Benjamin watched her walk away, an empty feeling gnawed at him. He instinctively started to call out to her, but Candice’s hand on his stopped him.

“What is it, Benjamin?” Candice asked, her smile radiant.

He suddenly deflated. He had loved Candice for so long, and now she was finally by his side. Why was he still getting entangled with Rebekah?

He lowered his gaze, his eyes cool. “It’s nothing.”

“Ben, you made your wife look bad in public. She’s hurting. Look, as the man, sometimes you just need to suck it up and be more understanding,” Candice said, patting his shoulder like an old friend.

Benjamin’s focus returned to her, his expression softening. “Let’s go. We need to get you checked out.”

After completing her resignation paperwork, Rebekah was about to leave the hospital when her phone rang. It was Jensen.

A wave of relief washed over her, a reaction she didn’t consciously register. In the short time she had known him, Jensen had become the one person who could make her feel at ease.
