Chapter 248 Footage
Kai had been listening quietly for a while before finally frowning. Something about the tone at the table didn’t sit right with him.
“Come on,” he said, clearly irritated. “What’s with all of you tonight? Why are you being so harsh on Luna? Didn’t we agree we’d all look after her?”
Kai had been constantly traveling–filming, attending events, barely in one place long enough to rest. When the others had found Luna, he’d only shared their excitement over the phone, never seeing for himself what had happened between them since.
After leaving the Seabar horse farm, Luna’s accident had hit him hard.
He’d blamed himself, thinking that if he’d stayed a little longer, maybe she wouldn’t have been hurt.
And now, after finally meeting Niall and Rory’s daughter, he couldn’t shake his guilt. He’d failed to protect her.
So, seeing Leo and the others speaking to her so bluntly, his irritation only deepened.
For a moment, the table fell into awkward silence.
Luna reached under the table and brushed her fingertips lightly against Kai’s hand.
“Kai, don’t say that,” she said softly. “Leo and Ethan have always treated me so well. I’m already lucky to have all of you looking out for me.”
Her smile was calm and sincere, the picture of grace and humility–so convincing that anyone who didn’t know her better would have believed it came straight from the heart.
Kai’s chest tightened. “Luna, you’re too kind,” he said hoarsely. “To save the five of us, your-”
At the mention of the past, the table fell quiet again. The old pain never really dulled.
Kai took a steadying breath. “No matter what happens, you’ll always be like a sister to me. If I don’t treat you right, then who will?”
Luna smiled, her eyes shimmering with perfect gratitude.
“As for the rest of you…” Kai snorted. “If you think she’s too much trouble, fine. I’ll take care of Luna myself. Luna, if you ever need anything, come to me–don’t bother them.”
“Kai,” Ethan said sharply, his tone full of warning.
But Kai pretended not to hear. Luna glanced at the four men across from her, an apologetic look softening her features. Her voice trembled faintly, “Ethan, please don’t misunderstand. I know I shouldn’t expect too much. You’ve all been so good to me already. I’ll talk to Kai later.”
Kai scoffed. “See that? Even now she’s trying to smooth things over. Don’t you all feel ashamed, making her tiptoe around you? Only Niall and Rory could have raised such a kind, well–mannered girl.”

At the mention of Niall and Rory, pride lit up Kai’s face.
Ethan and the others exchanged subtle looks and said nothing. They understood–Kai was just like they had been at first. Blinded by gratitude, unable to see what lay beneath Luna’s polished exterior.
Time would teach him.
It wasn’t that they found Luna troublesome.
It was that sometimes, being too kind to someone was the cruelest thing they could do.
After the meal, Luna politely refused Kai’s offer to take her home.
She waved goodbye and exited the dining room. But the moment she was out of sight, her expression cooled, and she slipped quietly down a side corridor toward the kitchen.
Beyond it was a narrow passage that led to the restaurant’s surveillance room.
Two security staff were on duty, both familiar with her face.
“Ms. Sterling.”
Luna returned the smile, elegant and composed, pulling two envelopes from her handbag. “I wanted to wish you both an early Happy New Year,” she said smoothly. “You’ve worked hard keeping the restaurant safe during the holiday rush.”
The men protested at first, but she insisted, pressing the envelopes into their hands.
Feeling their weight, both men’s eyes curved with delight.
“Thank you, Ms. Sterling.”
Luna’s tone was light, almost casual. “Oh, by the way, my boyfriend had a team dinner here recently and seems to have misplaced his watch. It’s not worth much, but it’s sentimental–we bought it on our anniversary. Could I trouble you to check the footage from that night?”
The two exchanged a glance. “Mr. Holloway, right? It’s been a while since his last visit,” one said. “Why not ask the manager or the owner?”
“It’s just a small thing,” Luna said smoothly. “I don’t want to bother Arthur when it’s so busy at the end of the year.”
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her smile graceful and composed.
“You’re always so thoughtful, Ms. Sterling. We’ll check right away.”
They pulled up the footage from last month and invited her to sit by the monitors.
Luna’s gaze flickered. After a moment, she found an excuse to send them away, then began reviewing the video on her own, fast–forwarding through the timeline.
