Late that night, at Capital Central Hospital.
By the time York and Peter arrived, Ann had already been moved into a private room.
Ann had been lying in bed, but when she saw York enter, she struggled, pushing away the nurse beside her.
She ripped the IV needle from the back of her hand and scrambled off the bed, sobbing, "Why did you save me? You should have just let me die!"
York dismissed the nurse and gently lifted Ann back onto the bed. "You tried to kill yourself by slitting your wrists. Did you even think about Ethan?"
"I've already sent Ethan to an orphanage." Ann said, her voice calm. "I've made sure Ethan won't be a problem for you anymore. I really don't want to live anymore, York. Please, stop caring about me!"
York held her injured hand, keeping her from moving it.
He said, "Ann, you're all Ethan has. Don't ever do something so foolish again."
At York's words of comfort, Ann broke down into aggrieved sobs.
"York, back then, your grandfather threatened me. He said that if I stayed with you, he would disown you and give the Ferguson family inheritance to your illegitimate half-brother."
"For the sake of your future, I forced myself to break up with you. But to sever our ties completely, your grandfather forced me to go abroad and marry someone else."
Ann’s voice trembled with tears.
"I was abused for six whole years. He beat me so badly I had several miscarriages. Even Ethan... he was conceived when that man raped me. But even then, I didn't dare come back. I was afraid of dragging you down."
"York, I did it all willingly, for you. But this time... I had no choice. The last thing I ever wanted was to destroy your marriage."
"It's just... I'm terrified. If your grandfather finds out Ethan isn't your biological son, he'll do the same thing he did six years ago. He'll force us out of the country again, or marry me off to some degenerate gambler. I'd rather die than live in constant fear like this!"
