He tried to ignore the argument and leave, but his grandfather's voice stopped him.
York walked into the living room and stood before Old Mr. Ferguson without a word.
"We've reached an agreement with the Watkins family," the old man informed him. "After the signing ceremony with Grandeur Group next month, you two will divorce. In the meantime, find a place for that woman and her son. Even after the divorce, you are not to publicly acknowledge their identity."
Sewell thought his son had done the right thing. "York, this is how a man should be. You're the heir to the Ferguson family, and you have a heavy burden on your shoulders. In the face of reality, feelings are worthless. The last thing you can afford is to be sentimental."
"I understand, Dad," York said wearily.
Wendy's chest heaved with anger. She pointed at her son, her eyes full of disappointment. "York, Claudia has been married to you for three years. She gave up her career to be a housewife because she trusted you. You cheated on her. What's so wrong with her wanting a divorce that you had to treat her this way?"
The image of Claudia's red-rimmed eyes, trembling lips, and despairing gaze sent a sharp pain through York's heart.
He lowered his head, his voice muffled. "Mom, I never said she was wrong."
Feeling drained, York collapsed onto the sofa. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and running his long fingers through his short hair.
Wendy stood before him, her tone earnest. "Son, when Claudia asked for a divorce, she didn't ask for anything because she didn't want to make things difficult for you. She wanted to give you a dignified way out. She was willing to walk away with nothing, but you couldn't even let her have that!"
Wendy continued, "You controlled her every move, schemed behind her back, demanded every penny back that you'd ever spent on her family, and left her with nothing. All because you think she isn't good enough for you!"
York shot to his feet. "Mom, that's not it!"
He couldn't sit still any longer and turned to leave.
Three days later, in the afternoon, Claudia was preparing to return to Caledon. Despite resting for a few days, she still looked pale and unwell.
Eddy was back at school, and Jessica and Felix walked Claudia to the entrance of their apartment complex.
