York hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
Ann got into the car and pulled a child's drawing from her purse.
When she spoke, her tone was careful. "Ethan's teacher assigned homework over the break. The whole family is supposed to help the kids draw a family portrait. Ethan secretly drew you in his. I just added a few details. Could you maybe help color it in?"
York didn't take the drawing or the colored pencils she offered.
"You seem to be around here a lot lately," he asked.
Ann's eyes darted away.
But she recovered quickly, admitting cheerfully, "Oh, it's not just a lot. I've been coming this way every day for the past few days."
Seeing the confusion in York's eyes, she explained, "My sister-in-law's family lives nearby, and they're going through some trouble at home. I've been coming over to help out."
The doubt in York's eyes slowly faded.
When he spoke again, his voice softened toward her. "Ann, I shouldn't be in Ethan's family portrait. You can't keep the truth from him forever."
The smile on Ann's face slowly froze.
She stole a glance at York's expression, her eyes welling up with hurt.
"York, Ethan should never have been brought into this world," she said. "He's ill-fated, just like me. He dreams of having a father. But you know what I've been through for you these past six years. I'll never dare to marry again. Please, just grant him this one small wish. I promise it won't happen again."
As she spoke, she once again offered the colored pencils to York.
York's eyelashes fluttered. He looked down and was silent for a long time before finally taking them from her.
