As York freed one hand to get the gift, Claudia seized the opportunity to break away from his hold.
She took a step back, her eyes resolute, creating a clear distance between them.
"York," she said, "whether it's gifts or people, I only want what is pure, what is unique, and what belongs solely to me!"
"Anything and everything to do with you," she added, "I hate it."
York's hand, halfway into his pocket, froze for a second before he pulled it out empty.
He stood before her, staring at her without moving.
The silence stretched on.
"Tell me," he finally asked, "what will it take for you to let this go?"
Claudia took two more steps back.
She enunciated each word clearly. "The lies you told me, your blueberry cake, your declaration of love on social media, your beloved Ann, your illegitimate son… I will never, ever get over any of it!"
York's deep eyes darkened.
He started walking toward her. "If you're willing, there's nothing that can't be overcome."
Claudia retreated, almost shouting, "I'm not willing!"
A shadow of exhaustion crossed York's face.
He reached for her hand, but she lost control and shoved him away. "My lawyer has already submitted all the evidence of your affair to the court. If you're absent for the hearing next week, I'll show you what it really looks like when I fight back!"
York frowned. "You gathered evidence?"
"If you had just agreed to the divorce, none of that evidence would matter."
They faced each other, the atmosphere thick with tension.
York placed the birthday cake outside the door.
