Claudia found York's question utterly absurd. She looked at him with undisguised sarcasm.
"York, you waited for Ann so devotedly for so many years. You know better than anyone how important it is," she retorted.
York loosened his tie, visibly frustrated.
"Ann and I ran into each other by chance. I wasn't deliberately waiting for her," he said.
He had agreed to bake her that blueberry cake and make that social media post to fulfill a birthday wish she'd had six years ago. On one hand, seeing Ann again after so long did stir something in him. On the other hand, she was ill and suffering from depression, and he wanted to comfort her.
That small flicker of emotion wasn't enough to make him lose his senses and make a terrible decision.
He had deleted the post he promised Ann he'd make after only sixty seconds.
He hadn't accounted for Darleen seeing it in just sixty seconds, taking a screenshot, and sending it right to Claudia.
He had claimed the child as his own to prevent his grandfather from hurting Ann and her son again, just as he had six years ago.
He had promised Ann he wouldn't reveal the child's real parentage.
But Claudia couldn't accept Ann, much less the existence of the child.
Given their current situation, one of them had to give in.
If they continued this standoff, they would only destroy each other.
Their eyes met, and a scornful smile touched Claudia's lips.
A chance reunion. How noble of him to put it that way.
York moved closer to Claudia, his expression unreadable.
He placed his hands on her shoulders, giving her no room to escape.
"Claudia, it's simple. Everything comes down to resources and what gets things done. 'I love you' is a phrase. What's the practical use?" he said.
