"Claudia, everyone knows how much York dotes on you. If he had someone else on the side, I'd eat my hat."
"York is successful and so devoted to his family. He's the gold standard for a good husband in our circle."
"Exactly. Mr. Ferguson is known for keeping his nose clean."
...
Claudia listened to the chatter with a calm expression.
She looked directly at York and said, "We're in the middle of divorce proceedings. Ask him yourself if you don't believe me."
The crowd's attention immediately shifted to York.
York set down his drink and stood up.
He walked over to Claudia, picked up her handbag from the seat next to her, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her out of the room.
They stood facing each other in the hallway.
Everyone else crowded near the doorway to watch.
York spoke through gritted teeth. "Let's find somewhere private to talk."
Claudia replied matter-of-factly, "The two of us can't reach an agreement. You should bring your sweetheart along. Maybe then we'll get a result."
York's face darkened.
"Claudia," he said, "do you have to drag other people into a matter between husband and wife?"
Claudia shook his hand off and took her bag back.
She corrected him, "She's not just ‘other people.' She's the woman you love, the mother of your child."
They stared at each other up close, the tension thick and suffocating.
York forced a tight-lipped smile but offered no explanation.
Claudia's voice was cold as she warned him, "York, even if you rule Capital City, even if the Ferguson Group has the best legal team, you can't cover up the fact that you cheated during our marriage and have an illegitimate child!"
