Claudia couldn't help but let out a sarcastic laugh. "I used to only half-understand, but now I finally get it. Why it had to be me as Mrs. Ferguson."
York's gaze flickered as he stared into her eyes. "Tell me."
The two of them locked eyes in silence.
Claudia curled her lip.
Because she was born into old money, her upbringing and pride were etched into her very being.
She was born noble. She wouldn't lower herself to get into a catfight with the other woman, nor would she let herself go because of an unhappy marriage.
And because the Watkins family had gone bankrupt after raising her, she had no background, no one to back her up. She was completely at his mercy.
York needed the perfect arm candy. She was the perfect fit.
Right then, Peter came over. He gave York a nasty glare, grabbed Claudia's arm, and pulled her aside.
York calmly blocked their path, asking Peter, "When did you get back in the country?"
Peter gave York an indifferent glance, his tone sharp and resentful. "If you hadn't called my dad, do you think I would have been shipped off and locked away abroad for so long? You heartless bastard. I can't be bothered with you."
Claudia shot Peter a grateful look. No wonder she hadn't seen him since she returned. His father had sent him overseas to keep him out of the way.
Peter swatted York's hand from Claudia's waist. "Get your filthy hands off her. I have something to say to Claudia."
York didn't argue with Peter. Instead, he spoke considerately to Claudia, "I'm going to go see Mr. Lennox. Don't wander off by yourself."
In public, Claudia played her part and gave a soft "Mm-hmm" before turning to leave with Peter.
