Claudia handed the food to her brother. "Go back to the room and have lunch with Mom. I'll take them down to the clinic."

As Claudia started to walk away, Eddy followed. She turned and gave him a warning look, and he reluctantly stopped.

After a doctor gave Ethan a full examination and found nothing wrong, Ann finally dropped the matter.

At the elevator bank in the clinic building, Ann said to Claudia, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Ferguson. Don't mind me for being overly cautious. Others might not know, but you, of all people, should understand my son's identity."

Claudia's expression remained unchanged. "A true identity is one that can be brought into the open, one that's recognized by everyone. What identity does your son have?"

The jab hit a nerve, and Ann felt a surge of discomfort. She forced a smile, deliberately trying to embarrass Claudia. "You're right, Mrs. Ferguson. It's all Ethan's father's fault, he spoils him so much. Even a scraped knee will have him holding the boy for ages, blaming me for not taking good care of our son. I suppose I overreacted."

Just then, Claudia's phone rang. She answered it right in front of Ann.

York's voice came through clearly. "How's your mom doing?"

Claudia glanced at Ann, her tone cold. "She's fine."

"Have you had lunch? Do you want me to come pick you up?" York asked.

Claudia gave a couple of perfunctory replies and hung up.

Noticing Ann's visibly stiff expression, Claudia deliberately provoked her. "I used to think you had a few tricks up your sleeve, but now it seems this is all you've got. You'd be better off just focusing on raising your child."
