Claudia readily agreed and went to the bathroom to get ready.
York sat alone on the edge of the bed, his face grim, stewing in silence for a long time.
It was a holiday morning, so neither of them was in a rush to leave.
They were both in the apartment, busy with their own stuff. Not a word passed between them.
In the spacious home, occupied by only the two of them, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Just as Claudia was about to leave, York finally broke the silence. "Your mother is being discharged tomorrow, and the New Year is in a couple of days. I'll take you to the mall this afternoon to buy some things for your parents."
Claudia nodded and opened the front door.
"Claudia," York called out, his voice cold. "Aren't you forgetting something?"
Claudia paused at the doorway for a moment. Realizing what he meant, she walked back over to him, stood on her toes, and gave him a quick kiss. It was a clearly perfunctory kiss, like an employee completing an assigned task.
Before York could reach for her, Claudia turned and left. The door remained open. York stood just inside, watching until the elevator doors closed behind her. He couldn't pinpoint what was wrong, but he intensely disliked her current attitude.
The ringing of his phone pulled York from his thoughts. Around ten in the morning, he arrived at the apartment complex where Ann was renting.
York eyed the space. "You told me Ethan was hurt. Where is he?"
