York answered with a grunt, stepping into the elevator and was gone.
Ever since Claudia had demanded a divorce and left the country, Ann had, out of a sense of guilt, moved to a rental on the Southside.
As a single mother juggling it all, she drew a clear line: no money, no unnecessary contact. Her only breach of this rule was asking him to pick up Ethan sometimes. It was her way of maintaining a respectful distance, of ensuring she caused no trouble for his family.
He just needed to give Claudia a little more time to slowly accept the existence of Ann and her son, and then all their problems would be solved.
Towards evening, York went to the hospital to pick up Claudia for their shopping trip.
In the women's clothing section, while Claudia was picking out a coat for her mother, York followed beside her with a shopping cart, offering suggestions from time to in time. The perfectly matched couple drew envious glances from those around them.
Claudia picked up a scarf and turned to ask for York's opinion, only to find him standing a few steps away, on the phone. She quietly put the scarf down and waited.
When York hung up, he walked back to her. "Ethan's water gun is broken," he said. "I'm going to the kids' toy section. I'll meet you back here in a bit."
Claudia said nothing.
York didn't ask for her opinion either; he just turned and headed for the toy section. Claudia tilted her head back slightly and took a deep breath. Her heart ached with resentment, but her mind was clear.
