"Let's go."
Without waiting for York to speak, Claudia stepped out the door first. Once they were in the car, York was busy taking calls. Claudia sat beside him, looking completely unconcerned.
When the car stopped in the courtyard of the Ferguson Mansion, Claudia got out, with York close behind.
York hung up his phone and grabbed Claudia's wrist to stop her. "Wait a second."
Claudia shook off his hand before he could say anything, waving a greeting to Darleen. She knew what he wanted to say. He was just going to remind her not to speak recklessly in front of the Ferguson elders.
Claudia stopped in the middle of the living room and politely greeted each family member.
Sewell confronted his son. "Look what you've done!"
"It was my mistake this time," York said calmly. "I'll be more careful in the future."
Wendy couldn't help but chime in. "If you walk by the river often enough, you're bound to get your shoes wet. Do you really think this is something you can solve just by 'being careful'?"
Sewell was furious. "Find the reporter who leaked this immediately! I'll make sure she can never work in Capital City again!"
York glanced discreetly at Claudia before speaking. "Dad, the fault is mine. It has nothing to do with anyone else."
The Old Mr. Ferguson, seated in the main armchair, looked at the butler.
The butler dismissed all the servants and 'escorted' Darleen upstairs. He then returned with a whip and stood respectfully behind Old Mr. Ferguson.
"Kneel!" Old Mr. Ferguson's voice thundered.
York glanced at Claudia.
He shrugged off his suit jacket and handed it to her. She took it with the same composure, as if it were the most ordinary thing.
