Claudia's indifferent attitude infuriated York.
He grabbed her wrist, stopping her from getting into bed, and demanded, his face grim, "You stay out all night on Christmas Eve, drinking heavily. Have I been too lenient with you lately?"
Claudia shook his hand off and climbed into bed, looking at him with an innocent expression. "I just went out with a friend to celebrate the holiday. Is it really worth getting this angry over?"
York's temples throbbed with suppressed rage.
He loomed over her, his gaze intense, his voice heavy. "Your phone was off, you were gone all night, and then you show up in front of my family drunk and wearing a stranger's jacket. And you call that just 'celebrating'?"
Claudia lowered her eyes.
It seemed she wouldn't be getting any sleep until they had this fight.
Her tone was quiet, devoid of emotion. "York, on Christmas Eve, you abandoned me on the side of the road to be with your beloved woman and son. I didn't give you a hard time about it, did I?"
"I told you I'd be back soon," York shot back.
"Whether you came back or not was your choice," she countered. "But in that moment, you had already made your decision!"
The atmosphere grew tense.
They fell into a silent stalemate.
After a long moment, York asked her, "If you cared so much, why did you pretend to be so generous and encourage me to go with them?"
Claudia laughed. "York, do you see me as some kind of pathetic doormat?"
"When I first found out you got back together with Ann and had a child," she said, her voice cutting, "do you remember how I cornered you, again and again? And how you hurt me, again and again?"
York's dark eyes turned dangerously grim.
