Claudia tossed the agreement aside and got out of bed.

She stood before him, barefoot. "The prenuptial agreement doesn't say I have to be home right after work."

York's eyes were deep and his expression was calm, but his tone was flat. "Claudia, I make the rules. You are in no position to negotiate terms with me."

Faced with his overbearing dominance, Claudia's voice rose unconsciously. "York, don't push me too far!"

A cruel smile touched his lips. He warned her, his face devoid of expression, "I have ten thousand ways to make you lose your current job. Feel free to test me."

"You bastard, York!"

Overcome with rage, Claudia slapped him hard across the face.

The force of the blow snapped his head to the side. He pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek, and when he looked at her again, his eyes held a simmering danger.

Before Claudia could react, York grabbed her by the waist, threw her onto the bed, and descended upon her.

His brute force and aggression terrified Claudia. She struggled, trying to protect the last bit of covering on her chest. "York, don't make me hate you!"

A flicker of an unreadable emotion crossed his eyes.

"Your hate," he said, "is as meaningless to me as your love."

Hours later, York got up and went to the bathroom.

The bedroom floor was a chaotic mess of discarded clothes.

A woman's black lace underwear lay tossed on a man's white dress shirt, adding a lurid tint to the room's fading intimacy.

Claudia lay numbly on her side on the large bed, the blanket having slipped down to her chest.

The skin left exposed was covered in shocking, angry marks.

When York came out of the bathroom, he stared at Claudia's motionless form from a distance.

His brow furrowed deeply, and an inexplicable tightness gripped his heart.

York turned away, his steps slightly unsteady.
