Claudia's accusation drew shocked stares and murmurs from the crowd.
Ann quickly stepped forward to explain. "Mrs. Ferguson, please don't misunderstand. My period came early, and I accidentally stained my dress. Mr. Ferguson was just being a gentleman and helping me out."
"You're Miss Hawk's friend," Claudia retorted. "If your period came early, why didn't you ask your female friend for help? Why did you have to ask my husband?"
Faced with Claudia's sharp questioning and the judgmental eyes of the crowd, Ann looked helplessly at York, stammering, unable to form a coherent explanation.
Her guilty silence was as good as a confession, confirming the ambiguous nature of her relationship with York.
York's complicated gaze was fixed on Claudia's reaction.
He pulled her in front of him. "Don't get it wrong," he said. "I was just lending a hand."
In front of everyone, Claudia wrenched her hand from his grip.
She deliberately raised her voice. "York, everyone here saw how intimately she called your name!"
"You left me alone at the party, brought her to our private room, and let her wear my clothes," Claudia continued, her voice rising. "And you expect me to believe you were just 'lending a hand'?"
She confronted him, her voice trembling with accusation. "What does that make me, your wife?"
Their eyes locked, and York felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He took a step closer, looking directly into her eyes, and lowered his voice. "Do you really have to make such an ugly scene?"
He knew she was doing this on purpose.
Bringing people upstairs to play cards was a lie; her real intention was to catch him in the act.
She was creating this drama to expose his relationship with Ann to the public.
She hated him. She wanted revenge.
