Claudia leaned against the counter, taking another small sip of water.
York's already tense expression hardened.
"Why didn't you call me when you left early?" he demanded.
Claudia said nothing.
York took a deep breath. "Why were you with him tonight? And why did you let him answer your phone?"
Claudia met his gaze, opened her mouth, then closed it again without a word.
York's chest heaved with suppressed fury.
"Claudia, you were in a strange man's apartment late at night, making his bed. Do you think that's appropriate?"
Claudia slowly set down her glass.
"You've asked me so many questions," she said calmly. "Which one should I answer first?"
Their eyes locked. York's were practically shooting sparks.
"I suggest you fix your attitude," he warned.
A sarcastic smile touched Claudia's lips.
"York, compared to you, I think my attitude is perfectly reasonable," she replied.
"I was wrong not to tell you I left early," she continued. "I forgot. But the moment I remembered, I called you and sent you a text."
"The text you sent said you were home!" York corrected her.
Claudia shrugged, refusing to argue the point. "I was in the apartment building, which is basically home. Let's not get caught up in the details."
York stared at her, taking another deep breath.
"It was wrong of me to let Master Sayer answer the phone," Claudia said. "I was busy and my hands were full. I was just afraid of missing your call. You shouldn't overthink it."
