Peter lit a cigarette and stood beside him on the balcony. "I never thought Claudia had the grace and composure of a true matriarch. You really lucked out."

York muttered sullenly, "She's gone insane!"

"If she's insane," Peter shot back, "it's because you drove her to it!"

York closed his eyes wearily and took several deep breaths.

When he spoke, his voice was low and slow. "This isn't the outcome I wanted."

Peter turned to face him. "York, whether you admit it or not, Claudia doesn't love you anymore."

When York remained silent, Peter continued, "You're the one who personally killed that confident, vibrant Miss Watkins. You killed the Claudia whose eyes used to be filled with nothing but you."

York stood there like a statue, his back straight, face completely blank. He didn't move a muscle, just stared ahead. But the hand holding his cigarette was shaking like a leaf.

After a long silence, York's voice was strained. "Our bond is too deep. She can't just let go because she wants to."

He had only acknowledged Ann's child and helped her hide his true parentage because she had sacrificed so much for him.

Even if he was at fault, he had never thought of giving up on their marriage, of giving up on Claudia as his wife.

Peter looked at York as if he'd seen a ghost. "Claudia loved you for so many years. Do you think she wanted to give up?"

"She married you full of joy, but you spent your days with Ann James and her son. You forced her to stay in this marriage that looks glamorous on the outside but is rotten to the core. She never got your special favor or your exceptions, nor your respect or loyalty. You couldn't give her security, and she couldn't see a future with you.
