Claudia lowered her gaze and nodded.
They stood side by side on the balcony, Claudia's eyes lost in the nightscape.
York watched her.
After a brief silence, York spoke, "Claudia, I know you've lost your trust in me, but there are some things I need to make clear to you again."
"Well," she responded, her demeanor unusually calm. "Go on."
"Ann is my past," York said. "That child was an accident. If you really can't accept it, I'll find a way to send them away."
Claudia silently drew her gaze back and turned to face him.
"York," she said, "you were the one who forced me to accept them. It was a struggle, but I did it. I accept them completely."
Ann and her son were his life. How could he possibly bear to send them away?
Besides, she had finally managed to team up with Ann. There was no way she would let Ann leave now.
York gripped Claudia's shoulders, looking directly into her eyes. "You made Ethan your godson without consulting me. You set them up in a home right above ours. This isn't acceptance, Claudia. This is recklessness!"
Claudia tilted her head back, meeting his gaze.
She asked, "Haven't you provided them with property before? And you never stopped the child from calling you 'Daddy' in private. You were willing to threaten your grandfather with your life for them. We've been childhood sweethearts for over twenty years. I couldn't stand to see you struggle, so I wanted to help. How is that reckless?"
York felt as if his heart had been dropped from a great height, shattering into countless pieces that he could never reassemble. The sense of powerlessness nearly brought him to his knees.
He stepped back, his hands still on her shoulders, leaning against the railing for support.
"No matter what, I never brought them into our home!" he said.
"Claudia, what are you trying to achieve with all this? Do you even want this family anymore?"
Claudia smiled. "York, do you want the truth or a lie?"
