Claudia grabbed her phone and got out of bed. "You go to sleep. I'll take this next door."
"Is there something I can't hear?" York asked, stopping her.
"Just work stuff," Claudia said. "You wouldn't get it. Get some sleep."
"If it's work, then there's even less reason to hide it from me."
Claudia found this laughable.
She looked him straight in the eye. "If I ever start seeing someone else, I'll be sure to tell you loud and clear."
They stared at each other for a moment before Claudia pushed past him.
York froze again, a heavy tightness constricting his chest.
"Claudia," he called out to her as she reached the door, "you'd better just be saying that to upset me."
Claudia heard him but didn't look back.
If that day ever came, she wouldn't hide it. She would tell York plainly that she had fallen in love with someone else.
About ten minutes later, Claudia came out of the adjoining room to find York pacing in the living room.
Their eyes met from across the space, and then Claudia went back into the bedroom.
She plugged her phone in to charge and got into bed.
York followed her in, handing her a glass of water.
Claudia took it but didn't drink.
"You should get some sleep," she said. "I have clinic hours in the morning and a visit to Grant Manor in the afternoon. It's going to be another long day."
With that, she turned on her side, her back to him, making no mention of seeing him with Ann and her son.
