The cup missed its target, shattering on the floor behind them with a sharp crack.

York released Claudia and turned to Old Mr. Ferguson. "Grandfather, what are you doing?"

Leaning on his cane, the old man stood before the main sofa. He pointed a trembling finger at Claudia. "Get on your knees!"

Claudia pushed York aside and walked coolly to face Old Mr. Ferguson. "Grandfather, if you have something to say, say it. Don't resort to ordering people to kneel. I'm not your grandson, so I have no reason to kneel for you."

Seeing Claudia's open defiance, Sewell pointed at her and shouted, "You married into this family, so you are a Ferguson! You will abide by the Ferguson family rules! When an elder tells you to kneel, you kneel!"

York stepped in front of Claudia, shielding her. "Grandfather, Dad, if you have a problem, take it up with me. Don't you dare speak to my wife like that."

The word 'wife' made Claudia frown. She pushed him away again, her gaze challenging Old Mr. Ferguson. "Since I married into the Ferguson family, have any of you ever really treated me as one of your own?"

"Your grandson is the one who cheated," she continued, her voice rising. "He has a child out there with another woman. As his elders, have you once considered my feelings in all of this?"

York stared at her, an unreadable emotion swirling in his eyes.

Sewell was practically apoplectic. "You're just the daughter of a bankrupt family! You've been married to York for three years and haven't even given us a child! The fact that York hasn't divorced you is an act of mercy, and still, you're not satisfied!"

"Ann gave your family a great-grandson!" Claudia shot back. "She's York's real wife, and that child is his son. They are the true Fergusons! Since you want a grandson so badly, why don't you just welcome them into the family?"
