But Claudia felt no gratitude.
"I didn't hold a knife to York's throat and force him to sleep with another woman," she retorted. "He cheated on me with Ann and had a son with her. That's a fact. If you're so powerful, then go shut everyone up. Stop bullying me just because my family has no one to stand up for me!"
Old Mr. Ferguson, who had been silent for some time, pointed at Claudia, his hand trembling with rage. "You wretched girl! Kneel!"
Claudia stood tall. “I kneel to heaven, to earth, and to the parents who gave me life. You didn’t bring me into this world, nor did you raise me. Why should I kneel to you?”
In the past, she had loved York, and so she also cherished his family. For York's sake, she had been unfailingly respectful to the Ferguson elders, terrified of displeasing them. That deference had spoiled them rotten.
Now, she didn't even want York anymore.
To hell with their elders, to hell with their rules.
If they couldn't stand her, they could grant her a divorce. If they wouldn't, they would just have to suffer her.
She would not be the one to break.
"Guards!" Old Mr. Ferguson roared, pointing at the door. "Come in here and restrain this rude thing!"
At his command, several bodyguards rushed into the room. York grabbed Claudia's wrist, pulling her behind him. "Grandfather, Claudia is my wife. Don't take this too far!"
Claudia struggled out of his grasp.
"What are you doing?" York snapped. "Is this really the time to be stubborn with me?"
