Claudia jumped, startled. "Why don't you knock before coming in?"

York's gaze fell on the sanitary pad in her hand. His dark eyes stared intently at the bloodstain. "Sorry," he said, his voice flat. "I thought no one was in here."

His expression slowly dimmed. He backed out of the bathroom and pulled the door shut for her.

Claudia locked the door as fast as she could and let out a long, shaky breath. Thank God she had been so thorough in her preparations. Otherwise, she'd never have been able to withstand York's constant, sudden probes.

She had to stay vigilant until she could go to Havenport at the end of the month and terminate the pregnancy.

After composing herself, Claudia came out of the bathroom and found that York wasn't in the bedroom. She didn't bother looking for him and went straight to bed.

The next morning, Claudia ran into Ann in the hospital corridor. The April weather was mild, but Ann was bundled up from head to toe. Seeing Claudia in her white coat, looking composed and confident, Ann's eyes filled with jealousy.

Their gazes met for a moment before Claudia turned to walk away. Ann hurried to block her path. "Can I have a few minutes of your time?"

Claudia nodded and led Ann into an empty examination room.

Ann removed her mask, revealing a haggard face. Claudia looked her up and down. Aside from the designer labels on her clothes, there was nothing remarkable about Ann. Average family, average looks, average personality, and average abilities. And yet, she had somehow captured the heart of the Ferguson heir, making him love her to distraction. Perhaps it was true that beauty was in the eye of the beholder.

Ann caught the disdain in Claudia's eyes. Her hand, clutching a bag of medicine, tightened unconsciously. She hated that superior, dismissive look on Claudia's face. It was just like that old bitch, Wendy.
