York changed the subject. "Claudia, do you have any idea what Hugh's rates are? His consultation fee is sky-high. And ever since he started practicing, he's only handled corporate cases. For him to make an exception for you just like that... have you ever stopped to think what he might be expecting in return?"
Claudia shot back immediately. "York, you might think I'm worthless, but that doesn't mean everyone else does. Mr. Ferguson is a good father. I did my best to help his son recover, and he's helping me with my case as a form of payment. If you have other ideas, they're just that—your ideas."
York tentatively reached for her hand, but she pulled away angrily.
York reined in his temper, his voice softening when he spoke again.
"Even if we do get divorced," he asked quietly, "can you really find someone better than me?"
Claudia looked him in the eye. "A woman doesn't need a man to survive. Marriage isn't everything for a woman."
The warmth in York's eyes slowly faded.
He spoke to her with an icy calm. "Claudia, if you think one Hugh Ferguson is enough to get you what you want, you are sorely mistaken."
"York," Claudia declared, "with or without Hugh, I am getting this divorce!"
York scoffed and ordered the driver to start the car.
Despite her struggles, York brought her directly back to their home.
Claudia stared at York with a guarded expression.
This was the first time since she'd known him that he had lost his temper and control in front of her.
An unsettling thought crossed her mind: the news story about a famous professor who killed and dismembered his wife after she filed for divorce.
York bent down and placed a pair of slippers at her feet. "You want a divorce? Fine, go ahead and make a scene. But until you have that divorce certificate in your hand, you will stay right here!"
Seeing her clutch her phone and refuse to move from the entryway, York felt all his strength and tactics drain away.
"You don't have to be so defensive," he said. "I haven't sunk so low as to force myself on my own wife."
