York nodded, and Ann obediently got into the car.

Through the window, she saw him get into Mark's car and couldn't help but smile.

He said he was going to give her a gift she'd never forget.

Since he'd said it himself, the gift was bound to be unexpectedly extravagant.

Ann pressed her hands over her racing heart, her mind flooding with fantasies.

Her ship was finally coming in.

By the side of the road, York watched the car carrying Ann drive away, his expression slowly turning to ice.

He turned and got into Mark's car, handing him the voice recorder.

"All the leads and evidence are on this," York said, his face dark and menacing.

"I'm giving you three days. Consolidate all the evidence, get another paternity test for Ethan James, and bring those two people to me."

Mark nodded. "Understood, Mr. Ferguson. I'll get on it immediately."

After giving Mark his instructions, York got out of the car.

It was just after five-thirty when he saw Claudia coming out of the main clinic building and walked over to meet her.

Claudia stopped. "Why are you still here?"

York reached for the tote bag in her hand, but after a moment's hesitation, she didn't let him take it.

His hand fell back to his side, empty. "Thank you for your help today. I've booked a table at a restaurant—"

Before he could finish, Claudia cut him off. "I only agreed to help because of a promise I made to you. No thanks are needed. My parents are expecting me for dinner."

"I can give you a ride home, it's on my way," York said. "And there are a few things I wanted to ask you."

Claudia glanced around, then walked with him, a few paces apart, to the small park in front of the hospital.
