York's expression was unreadable as he spoke. "You don't have to swear. I recorded this myself."
A bomb went off in Ann's head, leaving her mind completely blank.
Her mother, brother, and sister-in-law guiltily lowered their heads and hid behind her.
The crowd's sentiment turned entirely against Ann:
"I thought Ann was just some low-class mistress, but I never imagined she was a murderer."
"She looks so bitter and mean. What a vicious woman."
"And she thought she could marry into a wealthy family? Pathetic."
"Celia, is this the woman you said would be the next Mrs. Ferguson?"
...
Claudia, Wendy, and the others watched it all unfold from the back of the crowd.
Darleen looked at her mother worriedly. "Mom, are you okay?"
Wendy sighed. "Don't worry. Even if I'm angry, it's at your father for his affair. Thorne was just a boy. What fault was it of his?"
Darleen whispered, "Mom, aren't you upset that my brother spent so much time and money investigating Thorne's death behind your back?"
Wendy shook her head. "The boy is gone. What's the point of being upset now?"
She patted Darleen's hand and then walked toward Ann.
"Ann," Wendy said, her tone unyielding, "even if your family were reborn a dozen times over, you'd never deserve a place in our family. It's too late to take back what you've done. Get ready to answer to the law."
