They stared at each other at close range, and the light in York's eyes instantly dimmed.
It took him a long moment to find his voice.
"Claudia," he said, "even if we're divorced, even if you can't forgive me yet, we've known each other for over twenty years. You can trust that I would never harm you."
Claudia met his gaze, her expression placid, but her tone dripped with sarcasm.
"York, I used to rely on those twenty-plus years of history," she said. "I trusted you, I depended on you. Even knowing you didn't love me, I married you without a second thought. I thought that even if you didn't love me, at least you wouldn't hurt me. But how did that turn out?"
Their eyes met and held. A shadow of pain flickered across York's lips, but no word was spoken.
The atmosphere in the car became crushingly oppressive.
Claudia looked away and reached for the door handle.
York grabbed her wrist. She turned back to him.
Looking her straight in the eye, he said, "I'm sorry. It's all my fault."
Sensing her impatience, York switched topics.
He leaned closer, his voice low. "I've been sleeping worse without you. The medication you prescribed for me is gone."
Her tone was all business. "If you want a prescription, make an appointment."
With that, she tried to open the door again.
Losing control, York pulled her into an embrace.
He held her tight, refusing to let go even as she struggled in his arms.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his voice muffled. "If I don't make an appointment, will you really just leave me to suffer?"
Claudia pressed her hands against his chest, pushing with all her might. "We have nothing to do with each other anymore. Whether you live or die is none of my concern."
In the cramped space of the back seat, their struggle was intense.
Suddenly, York froze, his eyes fixed on her smooth neck. "Why aren't you wearing the necklace I gave you?"
Claudia broke free and straightened her clothes. "Whether I wear it or not is my business. It has nothing to do with you."
