York met Claudia's calm gaze and finally released her.

No wonder she had been so compliant in his arms. She must have seen her father coming in with the stick.

York turned to face Felix and Jessica. "Dad, Mom," he greeted them.

Jessica said nothing, simply pulling Claudia out of the bathroom.

Felix glared at him. "Don't call us that, Mr. Ferguson. We're not worthy of the title."

He tossed the stick aside. York followed him into the living room, his head bowed.

Claudia knew her parents didn't want to make things difficult for York, nor did they want to see him.

"You should go wait in the car," she told him. "I just need to have a word with my parents."

York glanced at her parents, who both pointedly looked away. He still managed a polite farewell before leaving.

As soon as he was gone, Jessica took Claudia's hand. "Claudia, what's going on with him? You're not…?"

Claudia reassured them. "Dad, Mom, what he wants to do is his business. I only brought him back to get something. Please don't overthink it."

Jessica remained worried. "Your father and I watched York grow up. He's always been very determined and stubborn. Now that Ann woman has been sentenced, I'm afraid he'll start pestering you again."

Claudia's tone was firm. "Mom, Dad, don't worry. I remember every bit of suffering I endured because of him. No matter what he does, I will never go back."

She paused for a moment. "But you know Mrs. Ferguson and Darleen have always been very good to me. York and I share the same friends and social circles. Even after the divorce, it's inevitable that our paths will cross."

"But you have absolutely nothing to worry about," she finished. "I have my boundaries."

With that, her parents said no more.

As Claudia was leaving, Jessica followed her to the door and handed her an umbrella. "The forecast says it's going to rain this afternoon. Take this with you."

Once in the car, Claudia's eyes fell on the red welt on York's white shirt, then she silently looked away.
