Wendy tried to reason with him. "York, now that you and Claudia are divorced, you should both move on."
York stood emotionlessly in the center of the living room, his voice firm. "I have my own plans, so don't try to force me!"
Old Mr. Ferguson's face was grim, his tone dripping with disapproval. "If you hadn't insisted on marrying that Watkins girl back then, you and the Windsor family's daughter would have been happily married by now, maybe even with a few children."
The sudden mention of the Windsor heiress made York frown.
His grandfather continued, "I've had someone put out feelers to the Windsors. After you turned down the marriage alliance, the Windsor girl focused on her career and has remained single all these years. She's always admired you and doesn't mind that you've been married before."
"Grandfather, I told you, don't force me!" York cut in.
Old Mr. Ferguson's word was law. "I've already discussed it with the Windsor patriarch. We'll have someone pick a good day for you two to get engaged."
York felt a suffocating tightness in his chest.
"Grandfather, I will not get engaged!"
With that, York turned and walked out.
Behind him, he heard his father's furious shouting mingled with the sound of a teacup shattering on the floor, but he didn't look back.
He was beginning to understand why Claudia had hated coming to the Ferguson Mansion so much. Why she had despised this family.
Late that night, at The Imperial Club.
