York's eyes narrowed. "Claudia Watkins, what are you doing?"

Claudia pushed away his outstretched hand and grabbed Old Mr. Ferguson's pant leg.

Her voice was a desperate plea. "Grandfather, Father, I'm begging you, let York be with that mother and son. Let us get a divorce!"

York's pupils constricted. He hauled her to her feet. "What nonsense are you talking about!"

Claudia struggled frantically.

She shoved York away and immediately dropped to her knees again.

She clutched Old Mr. Ferguson's trousers with one hand and Sewell's with the other.

Her voice trembled. "Grandfather, Father, I know my family has cost the Fergusons a lot of money since we went bankrupt. I won't run from the debt. I can sign an IOU. I'll have my parents and my brother come and sign one too. You can have my salary. I'll find a way to pay back the billion dollars."

York stared at Claudia's deathly pale face, the corners of his eyes turning red.

The realization that she might have overheard everything he'd just said hit him, and he swayed, nearly losing his balance.

Old Mr. Ferguson looked down at her, his voice stern. "Do you truly want to divorce York?"

Claudia raised a hand as if taking an oath. "Grandfather, I swear. After the divorce, I won't say a single bad word about the Ferguson family. If you want, you can hold a press conference, and I'll say I was the one who cheated. I'll say I ruined the marriage myself."

She added, "Don't worry, I'll leave with nothing. I won't take a single penny from York!"

"Claudia Watkins!" York hauled her up again.

His eyes were red as he gripped her shoulders tightly. "Do you have any idea what you're saying?!"
