York forcibly lifted Claudia from the floor. He couldn't bring himself to look at her shattered expression, and his voice was strained as he said, "We'll talk about this at home."
Claudia broke down completely, screaming and recoiling from his touch. "I'm not going back with you! I want a divorce!"
Ignoring her struggles, York scooped her into his arms and strode out of the study.
"What's going on?"
Wendy and Darleen were waiting anxiously in the living room. They were startled to see York emerge from the study, his face dark, carrying a sobbing and struggling Claudia.
"Mom, we're leaving."
York gave Claudia no chance to speak as he carried her away.
Sensing something was wrong, Wendy hurried into the study.
Seeing Wendy, Old Mr. Ferguson finally spoke. "Find some time to meet with that woman, Ann. Regardless of whether that child is York's or not, he absolutely cannot divorce Claudia Watkins."
Wendy simply nodded, saying nothing.
The old master valued the family's stability and reputation above all else. Even if the child really was York's, he would never acknowledge it.
Sewell was confused. "Dad, the Watkins family is finished. Claudia has been married to York for three years, with no children and no career. How is she any different from Ann? We could find York a new bride for a strategic alliance."
Old Mr. Ferguson turned and sat back in his chair. "Ann comes from humble beginnings. She's greedy, status-obsessed, and has no place here. Even with his child, she will never be allowed to marry into the Ferguson family."
