He also made a concession. "As for your job, just let it go for now. Don't go to my grandfather yourself. We'll talk about it when I get back."
"No need," Claudia replied. "I've already quit."
York's grip on the phone tightened.
After a slight pause, he offered comfort. "Fine. You're my wife; you don't need to work so hard anyway. I'll give you my supplementary card when I get back."
Over the phone, Claudia's voice was flat, emotionless. "We can talk about it when you get back."
Since Claudia didn't refuse, York couldn't help but smile. "Is there any gift you want?"
In three years of marriage, he had offered her his card several times, and she had always refused. It seemed Ann's presence had finally made her feel a sense of crisis, made her start paying attention to his assets.
Claudia sidestepped the question. "My mom is calling me for dinner. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up."
York said, "Okay," and Claudia ended the call.
Just before four in the afternoon, at the entrance to Capital City International Airport.
Claudia had just finished a call with Gideon when she saw Ann walking straight toward her.
Claudia couldn't help but frown.
Ann, however, was all smiles. "Miss Watkins, I heard you have a flight at four-something. I came specially to see you off."
Claudia offered a perfunctory, "Thanks."
As Ann reached her, the smile on her face faded, replaced by a guarded expression.
