Zoe had just managed to get herself somewhat presentable when a knock hit the
door.
She rolled her eyes, thinking it was Lucian, and pulled it open-
Only to find Connor standing there.
Whatever softness was on her face vanished.
Her stare turned colder by the second under his gaze.
He opened his mouth-
Then froze.
His eyes locked on the marks trailing her neck and collarbone.
Deep red, unmistakable. Like someone hadn’t held back at all. Like they wanted everyone to know she was taken.
His breath hitched.
“…Who?”
Zoe followed his stare, caught sight of the marks on her shoulder, and muttered a curse at Lucian under her breath.
She calmly tugged her collar into place. “What does it have to do with you?”
Her voice was flat. She turned to shut the door.
Connor lunged, blocking it like some wild animal. His voice dropped, sharp and bitter.
“You slept with Lucian? Zoe, how long have you even known him? And you already –? You even know what kind of guy he is? Do you get—”
“Whether she understands me or not isn’t for you to judge.” Lucian’s voice sliced through.

He stepped in, planting himself between them, forcing Connor back.
“I’ll say this once–Zoe’s my wife now. She doesn’t want to see you. So stay away.”
His tone was cool as ever, but there was something new behind it–quiet triumph. The thrill of knowing he’d won.
Connor’s face clouded over. He tried to look past him, tried to find Zoe, but Lucian didn’t budge.
Confusion and rage twisted inside Connor. How had it come to this?
Just a month ago, Zoe had been glued to him. No matter how cold he was, she’d stayed loyal, in love, desperate.
And now?
She’d married someone else.
And slept with him.
Zoe shot Connor a look dripping with disgust.
She reached for Lucian’s hand without even thinking. When their eyes met, she threw him a playful glare–just a hint of sass, like she was low–key blaming him for the chaos.
Then she leaned into him.
Lucian caught it all. Smirked a little, scratched his nose, then pulled her inside.
Bang!
The door slammed shut, the sound echoing straight through Connor’s chest.
He’d seen everything–every touch, every little sign that Zoe trusted Lucian now.
But what really wrecked him?
That instinctive way she leaned into Lucian, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Once, a lifetime ago, Zoe used to look at him like that.
When she was upset, she’d show up at his door, tug on his sleeve, call him “Connie,” and ask the dumbest questions just to stay close.
He used to tease her on purpose, just to make her pout. Back then, he thought she was the cutest thing alive.
But the day he crushed her with that cruel rejection-
That Zoe vanished for good.
