Eleanor was a bit surprised. She hadn't ordered anything yet. Who could have ordered for her?
The nurse set up a meal tray over her bed and placed a nourishing fish chowder on it, along with three refreshing side dishes. At the same time, there was also one of the hospital's own nutritional meals.
"This is—" Eleanor looked at the nurse. "Who ordered this for me?"
The nurse smiled and explained, "The cafeteria meal was ordered for you by Mr. Young. This fish chowder was delivered from outside. I just brought them both up for you."
A mix of complicated feelings churned within Eleanor. The name on the container was from the same place she used to frequent. After the nurse left, Eleanor picked up her spoon and hesitated. The familiar aroma filled the air. She took a small bite—it tasted just as she remembered.
But her feelings were completely different now.
Eleanor picked up her phone and scrolled through her last messages with Mansfield. By her count, it had been thirty-eight days since she'd last heard from him.
A sudden pain shot through her wound, and she gritted her teeth until it passed. She looked out the window at the night sky. Another summer was approaching.
But when would he come back?
Eleanor typed out a message asking how he was but hesitated for a long time before sending it. She didn't know what he was doing now—if he was on a mission or in a life-or-death struggle with an enemy. On the battlefield, any single factor could change the outcome.
Eleanor swallowed hard and ultimately deleted the message.
After finishing her dinner, Eleanor called and spoke with her daughter, telling her she was on a business trip, which Evelyn completely believed. Later, Gwenda brought her laptop and stayed to chat for a while before leaving.
Eleanor had napped in the afternoon, so she wasn't sleepy. She opened her computer and got to work. Ryan and Callie had managed to complete the experiment that afternoon and had collected the data she needed.
The next morning, as Eleanor was taking her medication, a message from Ellington arrived. "Ms. Sutton, I've boarded the plane with Mr. Goodwin."
