Gavin turned away to take the call. Gwenda realized she had forgotten her phone and said to Eleanor, "Eleanor, wait for me, I'll be right back. I left my phone."

"I'm sorry, but I can't make that decision on Mr. Goodwin's behalf. You'll have to wait until he returns to the country to bring it up."

It was unclear what Vanessa said on the other end, but Gavin's voice grew tinged with impatience. "I understand your feelings, but I have no authority over Mr. Goodwin's personal matters. I apologize, but I have to go now."
