"As for everything else, you'll know when you're supposed to. When you're not, no matter how many times you ask, you won't get an answer. So stop wasting your energy on me."
Jonathan's calm tone made it sound like he was just stating a fact.
Dawn tried to steady her breathing and calm down.
She'd forgotten that Jonathan wasn't the kind of man who showed emotion. No one could ever get information out of him—no one could force him to say anything.
The fact that he'd agreed to let her go back to work must've been a rare moment of weakness.
If she pushed him now, he might change his mind—and that would mean complete darkness for her again.
Dawn bit her lip so hard she could taste blood, but she didn't say another word.
She turned and walked out.
Jonathan's dark eyes followed her as she left.
Things had reached a deadlock. Dawn hadn't figured out what to do next—but other people had already made the decision for her.
When she arrived at the office the next morning, she immediately noticed something off about Janice's expression.
"What happened?" she asked.
Janice hesitated. "You ... haven't checked your phone, have you?"
It wasn't that Dawn didn't check her phone—she simply didn't have one. The only place she could keep up with work updates was at the office.
Still confused, she walked back to her desk, turned on her computer, and opened the company app.
Messages flooded in—private chats, group notifications, all buzzing nonstop.
But they all said the same thing.
HR had posted an announcement last night. Due to company restructuring, Dawn's employment had been terminated. She would receive financial compensation in accordance with company policy.
In other words, she'd been fired.
"Hey, don't panic," Janice said quickly. Seeing Dawn's blank face, she thought she'd gone into shock. "Maybe the boss has something else planned for you. Or maybe he just wants you to relax and be a stay-at-home wife, huh?"
Dawn lifted her head. "Being a stay-at-home wife—is that supposed to be a good thing?"
"Well, yeah," Janice said with a nervous laugh. You don't have to work, you don't have to clean—it sounds amazing to me.
Dawn didn't reply.
Just then, Linda walked in holding a folder.
"Dawn," she said quietly, her expression complicated. "The boss asked me to give you this. Please take a look. If everything looks fine, sign at the bottom."
"Dawn, you ... " Janice stammered, not knowing what to say. How do you comfort someone like this?
