In the end, all that came out was a heavy sigh.
"Dawn, you're all grown up now. Your parents would want you to live well. Don't dwell too much on the past."
"Why? Is the past always something bad?"
"Well ... "
Joe hadn't expected her to counter like that. He was momentarily stuck.
Watching his expression shift, Dawn's tone grew more serious. She suddenly asked, "Do you have any other siblings, Professor Kerrigan?"
"What?" The topic change was abrupt, but Joe didn't even have time to think. He was quietly relieved. "I have a brother, but he's not in research. He's ... let's not talk about him."
He sounded pretty disappointed.
Dawn raised a brow. "Did something happen?"
Actually, ever since they walked into this private room, Joe had been on guard around Dawn.
But maybe people always felt more confident when facing someone who looked harmless. That confidence went up, and their guard went down.
Joe treated it like small talk and casually said, "Nothing big. I just don't like what he's doing now."
Dawn acted like she just realized something and said a couple of polite comforting lines.
On her way here, she'd asked Victor about it.
Joe did have a younger brother—a late-in-life child, spoiled and completely out of control.
And now Joe said himself—he didn't like what his brother was doing.
So ...
A sudden idea flashed through Dawn's mind.
They continued their casual chat until Jonathan arrived. After that, Dawn wasn't needed anymore. She ate while thinking, trying to figure out how to confirm her suspicion.
Tell Jonathan?
With her current position, that wasn't realistic.
Daniel?
The name showed up for a second, but she shot it down right away.
Whether it was that man, or the chairman behind him, or even Stonewarden Group—they all felt shady.
Their motives were unclear, but they definitely weren't the kind of partners you'd want.
By the time the meal ended, Dawn still hadn't found an answer.
Joe and Jonathan seemed to agree on something. When they said goodbye, they hugged and set a time to meet again.
As she watched Joe leave, Jonathan suddenly turned toward her. His dark eyes fixed on Dawn as he asked slowly, "What did you talk about before I arrived?"
His stare made her tense. She gripped the strap of her bag and retorted, "Just small talk. What else could I say?"
After that, she got into the car first.
Jonathan didn't move.
