Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 204

Agatha shot Julian a sideways glance. "What business is it of yours? Are you staying home tomorrow, or keeping your new girlfriend company?"

Julian was in a good mood. "I already spent today with her."

"Then you're not going out tomorrow?" Agatha asked bluntly. "I've invited that doctor over for dinner. It'd be good for you to meet her too—"

"No." Julian cut her off without thinking, his tone flat and serious. "I just remembered I have plans tomorrow."

Agatha glared at him, unamused. "You little brat. Is your girlfriend that jealous? She gets worked up if you even meet someone?"

Julian's eyes darkened for a moment. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket and spun it between his fingers. "If she were having dinner with a man she'd almost been matched with, I'd be jealous."

Every time he saw Caleb sitting beside Sydney, a relentless question gnawed at him: Why was her husband someone else? Why not him?

...

The next morning, Sydney rose early. After tidying up, she went to pay New Year's respects to Agatha. She entered the neighborhood herself this time rather than asking the older woman to come meet her.

"Ms. Wilson, Happy New Year!"

Seeing Sydney carrying an armful of health supplements, Agatha waved her hands. "Oh dear, I only asked you to come for a meal. Why bring so many things?"

"It's only right," Sydney said with a smile.

As she changed her shoes at the entryway, her gaze fell on a pair of leather shoes in the cabinet—ones that looked strikingly familiar.

They were high-end, handmade, and very expensive. Julian owned the same style and had worn that exact pair yesterday.

But Julian could not possibly be here—his grandmother was Eloise.

Slipping on wool slippers, Sydney followed Agatha into the living room, smiling. "These supplements were chosen according to your health. They're all safe to take."

"Good, good." Agatha beamed. "You've spent too much again."

From the rear seat, Julian's voice cut cold. "You trying to make me think you're mute?"

Peter muttered inwardly, 'Can't even handle the truth, huh.'

...

After lunch at Agatha's, Sydney lingered before taking her leave.

Alan and Eliana's flight was due to land at 4:00 p.m. at Jouleston Airport, and she had arranged to meet Marcus to pick them up together.

Driving to the entrance of Marcus' neighborhood, she checked the time. The post-holiday travel rush had begun, and the road to the airport was bound to be jammed. If traffic slowed, they would arrive just in time to meet her mentor and his wife.

Marcus got in the car and buckled his seatbelt while studying her face.

"You've lost weight during this period, haven't you?" he said with a soft chuckle.
