Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 220

Sydney did not want to waste another minute. Only by ending things quickly could she truly feel free from this marriage. Otherwise, every time Caleb cornered her, it felt as if something was lodged in her throat, impossible to spit out or swallow.

Hearing her so crisp and resolute, Adeline nearly spat blood in anger. She gritted her teeth. "Tell me, what good will divorce do for you? Without the Hampton family's protection, it will only bring you harm!"

Sydney almost laughed. Not humiliating her further was kindness enough, and she dared to call it protection.

Her voice remained calm as she replied, "You don't have to give it to me. I can go to Julian. I'm sure he'll find a way to help me reissue a divorce certificate."

Adeline had the connections to block Sydney from applying for a replacement. But with one call from Julian, Sydney could probably get ten certificates reissued in a single breath.

Of course, Sydney was bluffing. She had never intended to actually ask Julian for help. But if she did not drop his name now, who knew how long Adeline would stall before finally handing over the document?

She was done waiting.

Adeline remembered that Sydney had reconciled with Julian and now had his backing. But she had never imagined Sydney would actually use it as leverage.

'The nerve of this wretched girl! Has she forgotten that she needed the Hampton family back then just to be able to work smoothly outside the home?' Adeline thought indignantly.

Furious yet worried Sydney might really run to Julian, Adeline forced herself to soften her tone. "I can give you the divorce certificate. But I hope you'll promise me that, unless absolutely necessary, you won't tell Cal about this just yet."

She had no way to explain it to her son. Originally, she had planned to use her connections to void the certificate. But once it was entered into the system, there was no way to undo it.

Sydney replied casually, "Depends on my mood."

Once again, she realized how powerful Julian's name was. She had not expected it to affect Adeline as well. If she had known earlier, she could have obtained the certificate long ago. After all, no one would actually run to Julian to confirm her story.

It was truly over.

As she headed toward her car, Timothy barreled past her like a rolling melon, rushing toward a car that had appeared in the courtyard at some point.

"Mommy!"

Penelope stepped out of the car, bent down, and hugged him. "Did you miss Mommy?"

Timothy nodded vigorously. "Yeah!"

At a glance, it was a perfectly warm, tender scene of motherly love, the kind that could melt any lingering tension, a rare moment of unbroken peace.
