**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 304: Getting Caught**
“Ouch!”
Emma’s heart skipped a beat as she watched Corvin come crashing into the room, limbs flailing, and landing unceremoniously on the polished floor.
For a fleeting moment, the atmosphere in the grand palace felt as if time had come to a standstill, the very air thick with tension.
Emma blinked in disbelief, her mind racing. Then, with a sharpness that cut through the silence, she demanded, “Corvin, were you eavesdropping?”
Caught in the act, panic washed over Corvin like a cold wave. His thoughts scattered like autumn leaves before the wind.
In that instant, instinct kicked in. He sprang upright without bothering to brush off the dust clinging to his clothes, his hands flailing as if he were a marionette with tangled strings. “Emma, wait! You’ve got it all wrong! I swear, I wasn’t eavesdropping!”
His cheeks flared crimson, eyes darting around the room, desperately searching for a plausible excuse. “I was—uh—I was looking for you! You know, to ask where we’re hanging out this afternoon! Yes, that’s it!”
In a frantic bid to convince her, he pointed a shaky finger toward the door, his voice rising in urgency. “Silas and Edric came along too! They can back me up!”
Outside the threshold, Silas and Edric, who had been tiptoeing away in an attempt to escape the scene, froze mid-step, their bodies rigid with surprise.
In unison, they turned, their eyes sharp and piercing, slicing through the narrow crack of the door like daggers aimed straight at Corvin’s back.
Traitor.
With their retreat now blocked, Silas donned a smile that was as fresh as a spring breeze, gliding into the room with an air of calm sophistication. “Emma,” he said, his voice smooth and honeyed, “don’t pay any attention to Corvin’s ridiculous claims. We just arrived. Didn’t hear a thing.”
Edric followed closely behind, nodding vigorously in agreement. “Emma, we truly just got here. Not a word was heard.”
“Yeah, yeah!” Corvin seized the opportunity, his voice rising in pitch as he echoed their sentiments like a frantic parrot. “We just got here! That’s the truth!”
Amidst the chaos, a tiny cub perched atop Silas’s head stirred from its slumber. Captivated by Corvin’s frantic tone, it chimed in with an innocent, childlike voice, “Yeah, yeah! Mommy, we really just got here!”
A wave of relief washed over Corvin, Silas, and Edric as their perfect little witness emerged. After all, who would doubt the honesty of a cub?
But then, the cub delivered the final blow with a naïve clarity. “We only heard Lucien say he won’t dare again.”
An oppressive silence descended upon the room, thick and suffocating.
The color drained from Corvin’s face, leaving him as pale as a ghost; his mouth fell open in a perfect circle, wide enough for an egg to fit through.
Silas’s charming smile cracked, revealing the tension beneath, while the corners of his mouth twitched as if struggling against the weight of the moment.
