**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 306: Guilty Conscience**
Why won’t she trust me?
“There aren’t any beast cores of Rank 10 in this place, yet you promised Silas five of them. Were you planning to deceive him?”
Marcus couldn’t fathom the idea of tricking Silas. That was just not who he was, right?
“Confess for leniency, or I’ll make you regret it.” Emma raised her hand, gripping the ear Marcus hadn’t bothered to fold back. “If you don’t spill the truth, I’ll twist this right off your head.”
Marcus was taken aback. His huntress was a force to be reckoned with, fierce yet undeniably adorable. In that moment, all he yearned for was to lean in and kiss her.
He leaned closer, his lips nearly grazing her cheek, and finally spoke, his voice laced with a wounded innocence that made his heart ache.
“Ms. Tibarn, I’ve already explained. Those beast cores, I… well, I didn’t exactly snatch them. They were given to me.”
That was the extent of his defense. The cores he had previously given to Silas and Lucien were long gone; the remainder had been handed over to Corvin.
“They were given to you?”
Emma’s skepticism was palpable.
Who in their right mind would just hand over that many Rank 10 beast cores?
“So who exactly was so generous?” Emma pressed, her brows knitting together in suspicion.
“The Drakonid,” Marcus replied, maintaining a straight face. “They’re obsessed with hoarding treasures. Their vault is overflowing with Rank 10 beast cores.”
And even some Rank 11 ones, if he recalled correctly.
The last time he’d visited, he had only taken a handful and passed them along to Corvin and Lucien.
As these thoughts swirled in his mind, Marcus suddenly took Emma’s hand and pulled her upright, an idea sparking within him.
“Ms. Tibarn, come with me. I’ll show you where to get some.”
Perfect timing, he mused. I’m out of beast cores anyway; it’s high time I restocked.

**Chapter 306: Guilty Conscience**
Who knew when we’d return? I need to take plenty this time.
Marcus moved with surprising speed.
Before Emma could even process what was happening, he had whisked her straight to the Drakonid treasure vault.
The guards standing at the entrance turned pale the moment they laid eyes on him.
Then, without a second thought, they spun around and fled.
Emma stood there, her mouth agape. “They just… ran? Didn’t even try to stop you?”
Even if they couldn’t win, shouldn’t they at least put on a show of resistance?
This was their own vault, after all!
Marcus looked as innocent as a lamb. “Ms. Tibarn, I told you. They give it to me. When I show up, they don’t stop me.”
Except for that first encounter—when he had fought them—no Drakonid had dared to block his path since.
The fleeing guards, hearing Marcus’s words, screamed internally. It wasn’t that they were unwilling to confront him; they simply couldn’t!
Moreover, Mr. Smith and the elders had specifically instructed them that if Marcus ever returned, they were not to engage, but to report back to Mr. Smith.
