Nadine felt a sharp pain in her chest that hadn't subsided until then. If Sophie hadn't been gripping her hand so tightly, causing her to wince, she would have remained lost in her immense sorrow.
Nadine had kept Jack's death a secret, fearing that the news would be too much for Sophie to bear. Sophie had a heart disease, diabetes, and also suffered from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. At the time of Jack's passing, she had just been hospitalized for her heart condition.
Out of concern for Sophie's health, Nadine decided not to tell her about Jack's passing. She had taken care of all the arrangements alone. In the end, she had held Jack's ashes in her hands, laying him to rest in a martyrs' cemetery and placing a bouquet of daisies at his grave.
Losing her beloved had left her feeling utterly devastated, yet Nadine managed to stay strong and didn't shed a single tear. However, once everything was settled, the dam finally burst. She cried until her whole body shook, unable to contain her anguish.
Memories flooded back, and the painful past flashed before her eyes, tearing open an old wound that had never truly healed. Nadine remained silent, tears streaming down her face. After hearing her muffled sobs, Sophie quickly pieced together the painful truth.
"Nad, I've lived a long life, and I've seen it all. Birth, aging, sickness, and death are all just a part of life. You shouldn't have kept Jack's death from me. But I know you meant well and were only looking out for me, so I don't want to blame you.
"But I can't help but blame you! I couldn't even see him off when he left this world, and that's a regret I'll carry for the rest of my life!" Sophie's last words came out as a roar, as if she needed to expel everything from within her.
Victoria was overjoyed to see Sophie lash out at Nadine. With her head tilted, she stood there, enjoying the spectacle. "Nadine, if you think you can have peace while I'm suffering, you're sorely mistaken!"
Nadine was filled with pent-up anger, and when she spotted Victoria casually lounging on a bench with her legs crossed, she instantly lost it. She stormed over to the young lady who was playing dumb and slapped her hard across the face.
"What were you thinking? Why would you do that? She's your grandmother!"
Victoria shook her head and rose to her feet. She spat out the blood from her mouth and tilted her head at Nadine. "I thought you loved my older brother. Then, why did you marry another man?"
