Daniel's cold and dark gaze landed on Evelyn, staring straight into her eyes for a long while. "Who is she to you? Why are you so determined to help her?"
The moment those words left his lips, Evelyn knew—he'd heard everything! Her eyes were wide with panic as she looked at Daniel, who remained calm and composed. Fighting back tears, she asked, "You knew, didn't you? You've been pretending you didn't, just to watch me make a fool of myself, right?"
It felt like she'd been stabbed with a dull knife for so long, and it finally sank all the way in, twisting painfully in her heart.
"Daniel Hamilton, you really are a Hamilton. You're just like the rest of your family—ruthless and unfeeling! You could've confronted me the moment you walked in, but you didn't.
"Instead, you chose to remain silent and watch me flail and lie to cover my tracks, like some circus act! Was it gratifying for you to see me jump through hoops like a circus monkey?"
Her eyes were ablaze with fury, and her face was twisted in rage. She was no longer the poised and graceful lady of the Hamilton family. Her eyes, now bloodshot, bore a burning resentment toward Daniel, and her heart felt like it was bleeding.
When her older sister passed away, this man was so devastated that he collapsed several times. At the time, she thought it was hard to find a man who loved so deeply. Her mother had asked her to marry him, and she accepted, believing it was a blessing to marry someone as loving and devoted as Daniel.
However, after marrying him, she realized Daniel was respectful but distant. Most of the time, he treated her more like a business partner than his wife. He'd pay the bills while she managed the household and played her part as the lady of the Hamilton family.
The fact that he neither raised his voice nor reprimanded her showed just how little she meant to him. She wasn't even worth his anger. In the end, her 30 years of devotion had gone down the drain.
Daniel remained cold and unfeeling as he watched her break down on the ground. There was no hint of emotion in his eyes as he let her bawl her eyes out. After a moment of silence, he said, "I could help save your daughter."
Noticing a glimmer of hope, Evelyn shifted and sat on the ground. She looked at Daniel expectantly. "I'll do anything you ask! Just please, save Jeanie!"
