Brad heard the sound of tires rolling behind him. He, who was on the phone, immediately turned around and spotted Sebastian's flashy yellow Lamborghini.
As soon as he saw Nadine get out of the car, he hung up on Alex without saying goodbye. He then walked toward Nadine and Sean.
Sebastian had spent the entire afternoon with Nadine and Sean. They'd played to their hearts' content, then capped off the day with dinner at a nice restaurant. Nadine and Sean seemed happy, their faces lit with uncontainable smiles.
Unaware of Brad lurking in the shadows, Sebastian continued chatting with Nadine, laughter punctuating their conversation. He was telling her a riddle. "What has keys but can't open locks?"
Nadine pondered for a moment but couldn't come up with an answer. So, she gave up and asked, "Uh… a keyboard?"
Sebastian shook his head. "Nope! It's a piano, because it has keys, but it can't open locks!"
Nadine burst into laughter, her hearty laughter echoing through the quiet night. Brad could hear every note of it from where he stood.
He had never known that Nadine could laugh like that. In his memory, she was a quiet, timid woman who would stand before him, barely speaking above a whisper. Even when she did smile, it was always a tight-lipped smile. She'd never laughed out loud.
Her loud, carefree laughter made Brad's chest tighten. He took a deep breath and approached Nadine, who was lost in laughter. "Nadine!"
All of a sudden, he couldn't help but resent his grandfather. If Adam hadn't brought Sebastian into the picture, none of this would've happened. It was painfully obvious that Nadine was into Sebastian. Adam would regret it one day if she really ended up with him.
Sebastian didn't take Brad's snide remarks seriously. He stroked Sean's round little head and smiled. "There's always more business to be done and more money to be made, but nothing is more important than spending time with your family."
He then patted Sean's head. "What do you think, buddy? Don't you wish your mom and dad could be with you more?"
Sean, who had enjoyed his time with Sebastian, didn't seem to mind the gesture. He grinned at him. "You're right, Mr. Caldwell! I'd really love for both my mommy and daddy to spend time with me. But Mommy said Daddy's too busy, so it's fine as long as she's with me."
