The butler noticed Lydia staring a bit longer at the flowers and decided to explain. “Miss Lydia, you might not know this, but Mr. Jefferson and his late wife planted these flowers together. After she passed, he started spending a lot of time at the pond, just looking at the water lilies and remembering her.
“Every time the flowers start to fade, he gets really down. Even when other people come by and ask if they can pick a flower, he always says no.”
But today, just to welcome his granddaughter-in-law, he’d had people pick a bunch and arrange them in a vase, all to make her happy.
You could tell how much he cared for her.
Lydia felt even more surprised, and her heart softened in that moment.
“Grandpa Samuel, would it be alright if I took this vase of water lilies with me?” she asked gently.
Cut flowers would start wilting by the next day, and she didn’t want Grandpa Samuel to see them thrown out and get upset all over again.
Mr. Jefferson lit up with delight. “Of course you can, Lydia. If you like them, there are plenty more in the pond.”
“These are more than enough. You should keep the rest in the pond for yourself to enjoy.” Lydia’s voice was warm.
Suddenly, Mr. Jefferson realized what she was doing. She was so thoughtful and considerate, it touched him deeply.
“Lydia, come try some of these snacks and pastries. I hope you like them.”
Lydia sat down at his invitation. “Grandpa Samuel, let me check on your health first.”
Mr. Jefferson grinned, a little sheepish. He knew he didn’t really have any big health problems, but he played along, sitting in front of Lydia and holding out his hand.
Lydia quietly took his pulse. Everyone gathered around, watching closely, including Connor and Chris. After all, they all knew the old man was just pretending to be sick.
