“Yes, that must be it,” Lucinda whispered, trying to convince herself.
“Miss Lucinda, if that's the case, maybe we should come back another day. It’s already nine. If you’re not home soon, your parents might start to worry.”
Lucinda glanced longingly at the hospital building, her reluctance obvious, but finally she nodded. “Alright. I’ll come back tomorrow.”
They turned to leave, but just then a car pulled up behind them, heading toward the entrance. The sudden appearance startled them both, and they nearly stepped right into its path.
Lucinda’s heart skipped a beat. She looked up, ready to scold whoever was driving, but then she recognized the person behind the wheel.
“Miss Lucinda?” Aiden looked just as shocked as she was.
He had just wrapped up a long day at the office and was coming by to report to Connor. The last thing he expected was for two people to suddenly step out in front of his car. If he hadn’t slammed on the brakes, things could have been a lot worse. He definitely hadn’t expected to almost run over Lucinda, Connor’s maybe-fiancée.
“Aiden! Oh, thank goodness it’s you!” Lucinda rushed over, her frustration pouring out. “I’ve been trying to see Connor, but they just won’t let me inside.”
Aiden hesitated. “Miss Lucinda, it’s really late. The boss might already be resting. Maybe you could try again tomorrow?”
But Lucinda wasn’t about to give up now that she’d run into Connor’s right-hand man. “Aiden, please, just let me go up and see him for a minute. I’m really worried. I didn’t even know he was hurt until Grandpa Samuel told us today.”
Aiden really wasn’t sure what to do. He tried calling Connor for permission, but there was no answer.
Aiden let out a sigh. Whether or not Connor would be upset was really anyone’s guess, but at this point, it was out of his hands. He’d already run into Lucinda, so there was no turning back.
With Aiden leading the way, Lucinda finally walked through the hospital gates after waiting for four hours.
Upstairs, Connor was still deep into his research on Chief Lydia, glancing at the clock every few minutes as he waited for her ten o’clock livestream.
Suddenly, there was a gentle knock at the door, and Aiden’s voice came through. “Boss, are you awake?”
Connor turned off his screen and answered, “Come in.”
